Prime Minister Mark Carney is in Paris, France, to meet with President Emmanuel Macron in his first in-person meeting with an international leader as prime minister.
Carney, who turned 60 on Sunday, is kicking off his first full week as prime minister with a whirlwind three-day trip to France and the U.K., ending back in Canada’s north, in Iqaluit.
It follows an invitation by Macron before Carney was even sworn in as prime minister. The two world leaders are expected to discuss issues related to security in Europe and Canada and trade diversification.

Carney’s Government is Not Prioritizing Labor, Unions, and Workers: Jagmeet Singh
NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh has criticized Prime Minister Mark Carney for not assigning any specific portfolios for women, youth, or people with disabilities. Singh also pointed out that Carney’s cabinet does not include a dedicated labor minister.
He noted that Steven McKinnon now serves as the Minister of Jobs and Families, and while labor-related matters may still fall under his responsibilities, the portfolio’s name carries significant meaning.

Decrease in Immigrants Stopped at US-Canada Border, While Detentions in Canada Rise
The number of immigrants stopped from entering the US from Canada has dropped to its lowest level since May 2022, according to data from US Customs and Border Protection.
However, there has been an increase in the number of people detained after entering Canada. According to the report, US Border Patrol officers apprehended 481 individuals at the Canada-US border in February, down from 616 in January and a multi-year high of 3,601 in June of last year.

Man and woman accused in Edmonton security guard death plead not guilty
The two people accused in the shooting death of a 20-year-old Edmonton security guard have pleaded not guilty and will have a preliminary hearing this summer.
Evan Rain and Judith Saulteaux are both charged with first-degree murder in the death of Harshandeep Singh. Singh died in hospital in December after he was found unresponsive by Edmonton police officers who were responding to a report of a gunshot at a downtown apartment building.
