PM Carney defends decision to invite PM Modi to G7 summit

Prime Minister Mark Carney is defending his decision to invite Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the G7 Summit in Alberta later this month, as security officials investigate links between the Indian government and murder of a Canadian two years ago. Carney says that it makes sense to have India at the G7 table as one of the world's largest economies. The prime minister says the invitation was extended with a commitment to continued law enforcement discussions. Former prime minister Justin Trudeau said in 2023 that agents of the Indian government were linked to the murder of Sikh separatis

Liberals table bill to speed up approvals for major 'national interest' projects

Prime Minister Mark Carney's government is granting itself new powers to quickly push ahead major projects the federal cabinet deems to be in the national interest. Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Dominic LeBlanc tabled legislation in the House of Commons today which would give Ottawa the authority to draw up a list of large projects it wants to prioritize and expedite their federal approval. Carney says it has become too hard to build new projects in Canada and the legislation will lead Ottawa to take a more proactive approach to pushing such projects forward. The bill would create a new

Canada's unemployment rate hits nine-year high

Canada's unemployment rate has hit its highest level in nearly nine years, with 1.6 million people unemployed in the country. The total number of unemployed people last month was about 14 per cent higher than the same month a year ago, the statistics department said. This is mainly due to the fact that employment growth has remained almost stable amid a growing population, with no large-scale layoffs. StatCan said that this level of une

Calgary police probe speed, alcohol and drugs in fatal Deerfoot Trail crash

Calgary police are investigating whether speed, alcohol or drugs played a role in a deadly crash on Deerfoot Trail over the weekend that claimed the life of a man in his 50s. Investigators say the man was driving a Nissan Altima southbound on Deerfoot Trail, approaching Glenmore Trail, when the vehicle struck a construction barrier. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say the impact was severe enough that the car’s engine was ejected and landed in an adjacent lane of traffic. Shortly afterward, a second vehicle, a Toyota, struck the engine. The driver of that vehicle was take

Canada rules out ban on X amid international scrutiny over deepfake content, minister says

The federal government is not considering banning the social media platform X despite growing international concern over sexualized deepfake content generated by artificial intelligence, according to Canada’s minister responsible for AI policy. In a post on X, Solomon stated the government has no plans to prohibit the platform, which is owned by Elon Musk, even as it faces scrutiny abroad.
