CP Railway adjusts safety measures following B.C. train crash: safety board
The Transportation Safety Board says a mistake by a Canadian Pacific Railway supervisor set off a crash between a freight train and a railway work vehicle in Cache Creek, B.C.
The board's report says the supervisor was inspecting the main tracks on Dec. 29, 2022, in a vehicle that can operate on both roads and rail when he noticed a defect that needed repair.
It says that while the man was repairing the track, an eastbound freight train crashed into the unoccupied vehicle, but no one was hurt.

Trudeau says death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar 'ends a reign of terror'
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Israel's killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar in the Gaza Strip "ends a reign of terror."
The Israeli military declared today that it had killed Sinwar during a Wednesday battle and confirmed his death with a DNA test.
Sinwar was one of the chief architects of the attack on Israel last October that prompted an Israeli ground invasion, and a conflict that has drawn in countries across the Middle East.

Snow warnings along B.C.-Yukon border as southern B.C. braces for atmospheric river
Environment Canada has issued the first snowfall warnings of the season along the British Columbia and Yukon border, with accumulations up to 20 centimetres expected in some areas.
The weather office says the snow will spread through southwestern Yukon starting today and will persist until Saturday.
It says 10 centimetres of snow is expected in most regions, but predicts up to 25 centimetres in Swift River.
But it says an arctic ridge of high pressure will clear the skies on Sunday and temperatures will fall to about -20 degrees Celsius by Monday.

Hamas Leader Yahya Sinwar Killed In Gaza
Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, who masterminded the October 7 attacks in Israel last year, was killed an operation by Israeli forces in Gaza on Thursday.
Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz announced the killing of Sinwar after hours of operation in Gaza that led to killing of two more people. “The mass murderer Yahya Sinwar, responsible for the massacre and atrocities of October 7th, was eliminated today by IDF (Israeli military) soldiers,” Katz said in a statement sent to media.

Bangladesh court issues arrest warrant for ex-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina over deaths of protesters
A special court in Bangladesh issued arrest warrants on Thursday for former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 45 others, including her close aides, on charges of crimes against humanity during a student-led uprising in July and August that forced her to flee the country, a prosecutor said.
Prosecutor B.M. Sultan Mahmud said the Dhaka-based International Crimes Tribunal issued the arrest warrants in response to two petitions submitted by the prosecution.
He said the head of the tribunal, Golam Mortuza Majumdar, issued the orders in the presence of other judges.

Alberta government shifts continuing care from Health to Seniors Ministry
The Alberta government says long-term care and supportive living programs will no longer be under the purview of the provincial Health Ministry. Instead, Seniors and Social Services Minister Jason Nixon will be responsible for continuing care programs across Alberta. The change comes as part of the provincial government's health-care system overhaul that is seeing Alberta Health Services broken up into four new agencies, including one responsible for continuing care.

Border agency recovered nearly 2,000 stolen vehicles this year: transport minister
Canada's border guards have recovered more stolen vehicles at railyards and ports so far this year than in all of 2023.
Transport Minister Anita Anand says the Canada Border Services Agency has recovered 1,945 stolen vehicles, with the majority found in Quebec.
The federal government launched an action plan earlier this year to address the record rates of vehicle thefts, involving local and international police agencies, vehicle manufacturers and other partners.
