CRA fires 232 people for falsely claiming $2,000 monthly pandemic benefit
The Canada Revenue Agency has now fired more than 200 people for falsely claiming a federal income benefit during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The CRA says as of March 15, 232 employees "inappropriately applied for and received" the Canada Emergency Response Benefit and have been terminated, an increase of 47 since December.
The benefit, known as CERB for short, provided $2,000 per month to Canadians whose jobs were lost as a result of public health restrictions during the pandemic.
They must repay the CERB funds they received if they have not already done so.

Trudeau says premiers complaining about carbon price didn't pitch better ideas
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is pushing back against premiers who are asking him to cancel an upcoming increase to the federal carbon price, saying they have not proposed better ideas to fight climate change.
Trudeau says in a letter to premiers today that the last time they discussed the issue in 2022, their governments either didn't propose alternative solutions or couldn't meet federal standards for reducing emissions.

Statistics Canada says population growth rate in 2023 was highest since 1957
Statistics Canada says the country posted its highest annual population growth rate in more than six decades last year.
The agency says the population grew 3.2 per cent, its fastest pace since 1957 when it grew 3.3 per cent.
The increase brought the population to 40,769,890on Jan. 1, 2024.
The total was up by 1,271,872 people compared with the start of 2023.
Statistics Canada says most of the growth was due to temporary immigration last year.
Without temporary immigration, it says Canada's population growth rate would have been 1.2 per cent.

Kejriwal did not get relief from the Delhi High Court, the hearing against the arrest will now be held on April 3
The Delhi High Court has issued a notice to the ED in the case of the arrest of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the liquor scam and asked it to file a reply on April 2.
Kejriwal had filed a petition against the arrest and remand in the High Court, but he was not granted relief in today's hearing. The hearing in this case will now be held on April 3.

A day after the statement made by the US on the arrest of Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs has on Wednesday summoned American diplomat Gloria Barbena and expressed strong objection.

Arvind Kejriwal may get into another new trouble
Arvind Kejriwal, who is in the custody of ED in Delhi's liquor scam, may get into new trouble. In case of issuing a written order from custody, new gas may fall on them.
Legally, he cannot issue any official order as Chief Minister while in custody, but two such letters have come to light so far, which are said to be signed by Arvind Kejriwal.

Small drug seizures down in Vancouver post-decriminalization, police say
Data from Vancouver police shows a "dramatic" drop in small drug seizures after decriminalization came into effect in British Columbia last year.
The department says during the first nine months of the program officers did not seize any drugs under 2.5 grams, as is outlined in Health Canada's three-year exemption.
It says all drug possession seizures, regardless of weight, dropped 76 per cent in the city compared with the previous four-year average for the same time period.

B.C. warns of 'identical' government payment website made by 'malicious actors'
The British Columbia government is warning people about a scam involving its PayBC website, where an "identical fake website" is collecting personal and credit card information.
The PayBC site gives residents a secure place to pay their bills or for services from the provincial government, but it says it has become aware of phishing attempts against users.
A statement from the government says the two sites can't be told apart, although the website addresses are different.
It says the site was created by "malicious actors" to steal personal and financial information.
