Conservatives call for no-confidence vote by late January
Conservative MP Jonathan Williamson says he'll get the ball rolling early in the New Year on no-confidence vote that could bring down Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government in a little more than a month.
Williamson says in a social media post he will put forward his non-confidence motion at a public accounts committee meeting on Jan. 7.
He says the committee can debate it and then kick the motion over to the House of Commons to deal with when it returns on Jan. 27.
That could be voted on as early as Jan. 30, and could bring an immediate election if it passes.

LeBlanc, Joly to meet with incoming Trump administration officials in Florida
Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc and Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly are in Florida to meet with officials from president-elect Donald Trump's incoming administration.
A statement from LeBlanc's office says the duo travelled to Palm Beach, where they planned to use those talks to underscore "Canada's efforts to combat fentanyl trafficking and illegal migration and the measures outlined in Canada’s Border Plan."
Spokesman Jean-Sébastien Comeau says they will also emphasize the negative impacts of a potential 25 per cent tariff on Canadian goods, both in Canada and the U.S.

A fatal collision in Surrey on Christmas Day killed one woman: police
Police in Surrey are investigating a collision at an intersection, involving two vehicles, that has claimed the life of a passenger.
Surrey Police Service says officers responded to the scene at the intersection of Highway 15 and Highway 10 before noon on Dec. 25 when they found a passenger in the vehicle passed away despite life-saving efforts.
Police say the victim was an adult woman and the driver of the vehicle that hit another car remained at the scene and is cooperating with police.

Canada stops LMIA Points for Express Entry Starting Spring 2025
The Canadian government will stop awarding LMIA points for permanent residency (PR) under Express Entry starting in the spring of 2025. This was announced by Immigration Minister Mark Miller in a press release.
Until now, there was a benefit of receiving an additional LMIA point, ranging from 50 to 200, to qualify for PR. However, due to reports of fraud within the system, the government has decided to withdraw this provision.

Trudeau to chair Canada-U.S. relations cabinet committee amid calls to resign
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will chair a meeting of the cabinet committee on Canada-U.S. relations today, amid increasing calls for his resignation.

Ontario Reports Surge in Measles Cases
Ontario is experiencing a surge in measles cases, with the province's health officials reporting 37 cases, all linked to an outbreak in New Brunswick.
Public Health Ontario has confirmed 11 of these cases, while 26 are considered probable. The agency stated that the outbreak began in October, and 28 of those affected are children or young adults.
According to Public Health Ontario, all but two of the cases involve individuals who were not vaccinated.

Canada's Economy Contracts in November Despite Central Bank Rate Cuts
The Canadian economy experienced its first contraction of the year in November, despite the central bank implementing sharp interest rate cuts.
Statistics Canada reported on Monday that preliminary data indicated GDP fell by 0.1 percent in November, following a 0.3 percent growth in October.
If the November forecast holds in the final figure and December GDP growth remains stable, the fourth-quarter GDP will fall short of the Bank of Canada's 2 percent growth forecast.

Two killed, one injured in Metro Vancouver vehicle crash
Two people are dead after a major vehicle crash in Metro Vancouver early this morning. Mounties say the crash happened at the intersection of Boundary Road and Forest Street, on the Burnaby side of the city's border with Vancouver.
Police say a vehicle was travelling west on Forest Street when it was hit by a northbound vehicle on Boundary Road. Emergency responders at the scene attempted life-saving measures on the two occupants in the westbound vehicle, but police say both people died.
