A widespread winter storm is expected to bring freezing rain, blowing snow and strong winds to large parts of Eastern Canada today, continuing a stretch of disruptive weather across the country. Environment Canada has issued multiple warnings from Ontario through Atlantic Canada as conditions are expected to worsen through the day and into tonight.
In Ontario, forecasters say residents could see a range of hazardous conditions depending on the region. Freezing rain is expected in eastern areas, including Ottawa, while parts of northern Ontario near Lake Superior could see heavy snowfall. Timmins is among the communities forecast to receive significant accumulation, with snowfall totals potentially reaching several dozen centimetres.
Quebec is also bracing for challenging conditions, particularly in areas north of Montreal where snowfall amounts could reach up to 25 centimetres. Environment Canada warns that icy roads and reduced visibility may make travel difficult in both urban and rural areas.
Across Atlantic Canada, northern New Brunswick, most of Nova Scotia and all of Prince Edward Island are under freezing rain warnings through the evening. In Newfoundland and Labrador, strong winds combined with blowing snow are expected in the southwest, while freezing rain warnings remain in place for parts of the northeast.
The latest storm system follows a week of intense winter weather across much of Canada, including blizzards, extreme cold and repeated rounds of freezing rain. Officials continue to urge residents to monitor forecasts closely and adjust travel plans as conditions evolve.
