Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand has reiterated support for Greenland’s sovereignty following renewed U.S. interest in the self-governing Danish territory.
Anand spoke with Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen on Tuesday, emphasizing “Canada’s support for the fundamental importance of respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity.” The discussion comes after U.S. President Donald Trump appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as a special envoy to Greenland, with Landry stating the role aims to explore “making Greenland a part of the U.S.”
Anand is scheduled to visit Nuuk, Greenland’s capital, early next year to open a Canadian consulate, highlighting the country’s ongoing Arctic engagement. She noted Denmark remains a key partner through the Arctic Council and NATO, underscoring the importance of collaboration in northern security.
Earlier this month, Anand called for NATO to increase its focus on Arctic security, citing Canada’s historical contributions to European security efforts. Landry, meanwhile, insisted the U.S. is not attempting to “conquer anybody” or “take over anybody’s country.”
The issue underscores growing international attention on the Arctic region, where strategic and economic interests are increasingly intertwined with sovereignty concerns.
