The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has been called in to investigate a fatal shooting in Burnaby that left one man dead Wednesday evening.
Burnaby RCMP say frontline officers responded to reports of gunfire near the 3700 block of Canada Way just before 5:30 p.m. on January 22. Police located an adult male suffering from life-threatening injuries. Despite emergency medical efforts at the scene, the victim was pronounced dead.
A short time later, officers also found a vehicle engulfed in flames in the 5000 block of Buxton Street. Investigators are working to determine whether the burned vehicle is connected to the shooting.
Police believe the incident may have been targeted and say there is no ongoing risk to the public. Officers remained in the area Thursday continuing to collect evidence as the investigation progressed.
IHIT has assumed conduct of the case and will provide further updates. Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed suspicious activity or who has dash-camera or CCTV footage between 5:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. in the areas of Canada Way between Boundary Road and Willingdon Avenue, or Buxton Street near Royal Oak Avenue and Forglen Drive, to contact police.
