Imtiaz Ali, one of the finest filmmakers in the Bollywood Film Industry is currently all hyped up and excited for the release of his upcoming OTT project Chamkila. Based on the life of Amar Singh Chamkila, a popular singer and performer from Punjab, the film is set for a Netflix release and will be streaming from 12 April.

Recently, the film’s director and popular filmmaker Imtiaz Ali was interviewed by our host Faridoon Shahryar, and the conversation revealed many inside stories behind the project. As popularly known, Chamkila was also known for his double-meaning songs for which he was also often criticized by the public. And in the conversation, Imtiaz Ali had an explanation for the same.

Imtiaz feels that Chamkila realized in his early years that people around him loved this specific kind of content, which created a sense of relatability in his mind, therefore, he started creating songs with similar content as he grew up.

Apart from this Imtiaz also said that the audience that criticized Chamkila for the double-meaning songs was the same that also enjoyed the content of the songs. The Jab We Met director also said that Chamkila always knew that he’d be massively criticized for such songs but he still chose to do it because he knew his fans loved it.

Talking about what fascinated Imtiaz about making a film on Chamkila’s life, the filmmaker said he was astonished by the unique journey of Chamkila as an artist. He was compelled to know more about him as he thought about how a man can be both popular and criticised at the same time.

Moreover, coming to more details about the film’s theme, it will be based on Chamkila’s superhit songs with his wife Amar Kaur Chamkila, and the incident when the couple along with two members of their band on 8 March 1988 in an assassination which remains unresolved. In the film, Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra will be seen portraying the roles of the artist couple.
