Popular Punjabi singer Prabh Gill opened up in an exclusive Connect Cine interview about his early connection with global superstar Diljit Dosanjh, sharing how those formative years helped launch his career.

Visiting Connect Cine’s Surrey office, Gill recalled that Diljit was a regular visitor to his family home. It was through those visits that Gill’s father first mentioned his son’s interest in music. According to Gill, it was Diljit who suggested he begin by singing as a chorus vocalist.

“I was just starting out, and Diljit Bhaji told me I should try singing in the chorus for him,” Gill said. “For every show, I’d earn around ₹300, which I’d give to my mother.”

Those small beginnings proved decisive. “Being part of Diljit’s team was a massive learning opportunity. He made me a better singer and, more importantly, a better person.”

Gill even laughed as he recalled being mistaken for Diljit’s driver: “I drove him everywhere. People thought I was his driver, but honestly it just added to my experience and my connection with him.”

The mentorship, Gill explained, was more than professional. It shaped his discipline, vocal ability, and perspective on the industry. Today, as an established singer with hits of his own, Gill credits those years for building the foundation of his career.

For Surrey’s Punjabi diaspora, where both Diljit and Prabh Gill are widely celebrated, the story underscores the importance of mentorship and humility in an industry that often focuses only on stardom. Many young artists in Canada can see their own struggles reflected in Gill’s early journey.
