Surrey forum to address extortion calls, public safety: Satish Kumar
Following the shooting at Reflections Banquet Hall in Surrey, business owner Satish Kumar spoke to Connect FM today in an exclusive interview on the morning show and raised questions on the credibility on the steps being taken by the police agencies in dealing with extortion issues in the area.
He said that a forum is being organized next Sunday (June 15) from 2 pm to 4 pm. Satish Kumar said that a forum on ransoms will be held at Reflections Banquet Hall at 2 pm and he appealed to the community to join the forum and discuss the matter.

Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara calls for PM Modi's G-7 visit to be pulled
Surrey's Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara Sahib Security has written a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney expressing its deep disappointment over the invitation to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the G-7.

BC Ferries picks Chinese shipyard to build four new boats
BC Ferries has chosen a Chinese shipyard to build four new ferries for its passenger fleet, with the first arriving by 2029.
CEO Nicolas Jimenez says BC Ferries won't release the cost of the contract with China Merchants Industry Weihai Shipyards, and adds he's not worried about becoming a geopolitical bargaining chip in tensions between Canada and China.

SPS officers rescue two residents in suspicious overnight fire
Surrey Police Service (SPS) is investigating a suspicious overnight fire in Surrey’s Newton neighbourhood that has left two vehicles and one home damaged, and several residents displaced.
Shortly before 1:45 am on June 11, 2025, SPS Frontline officers responded to reports from a resident in the 13400 block 64 Avenue that a house on his street was on fire. Officers quickly arrived and encountered two vehicles and the front of a house on fire and active explosions happening. Residents of a basement suite were able to safely be evacuated but officers were advised about two upstairs residents.

Former minister and senior Akali leader Bikram Singh Majithia, who arrived to campaign for the by-election to be held in Ludhiana, Punjab, termed Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann a dummy Chief Minister. He said that now even the Chief Minister's thumbs are in their pockets by the people of Delhi.

Ottawa's GST rebate on new homes would save typical 1st-time buyer $27K: PBO
The parliamentary budget officer says Ottawa's plan to slash the sales tax on housing would save an eligible first-time homebuyer an average of roughly $27,000 off the price of a newly built home.
The federal government's fiscal watchdog predicts in a new analysis that a little over 71,000 new builds will quality for GST relief over the lifetime of the program.
The proposal would see the federal portion of the sales tax eliminated on a new home worth up to $1 million if it's bought by a qualifying first-time homebuyer.
The GST rebate would be phased down as the price of the home approaches $1.

U.K. Prime Minister to visit Ottawa before the G7 in Alberta
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will visit Ottawa between June 14 and 15 ahead of the G7 summit in Alberta next week.
Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the visit this morning.
An itinerary for the visit has not been released yet.
Carney last met with Starmer in London in March during his first international trip as Canada’s prime minister.
This comes at a time when Canada looks to strengthen trade and security ties with European allies.

Man accused of plotting shooting at New York Jewish centre extradited to U.S.
The U.S. Justice Department says a Pakistani citizen who was living in Canada has been extradited to New York, where he's accused of plotting to carry out a mass shooting at a Jewish centre.
The RCMP arrested Muhammad Shahzeb Khan in Quebec last September.
The Mounties said at the time he was in the process of planning a deadly attack targeting Jewish people in the U.S. and was facing charges in Canada.
