Bob Rae elected to lead UN international development body
Bob Rae, Canada’s ambassador to the United Nations, will head the UN’s Economic and Social Council.
Global Affairs Canada says Rae has been elected president of the council for a one-year term.
The Economic and Social Council is one of the UN’s main six bodies and co-ordinates its work on international development.
Global Affairs says Rae’s presidency will focus on ethical use of artificial intelligence for sustainable development, global migration and financing solutions for international development.

Jasper wildfire burns buildings, while poor air quality forces some fire crews out
A fast-moving wildfire has hit Jasper, Alberta, destroying buildings and chasing some wildland firefighters away with dangerously poor air quality.
The social media account for Jasper National Park says the fire has caused significant loss within the townsite, but the specific locations or neighbourhoods affected are not being reported.

Amritpal Singh's brother Harpreet Singh and his accomplice Lovepreet, who were arrested by the Punjab Police in a drug case, have been granted bail by the Phillaur court. Both of them were arrested a few days ago by the Phillaur police allegedly along with four grams of ice drug.

Team chosen to design eight-lane replacement for B.C.'s Massey tunnel
A team has been selected to design a new eight-lane tunnel to replace the aging George Massey Tunnel under the Fraser River in Metro Vancouver, with British Columbia's transportation minister calling it a "huge step" for the project.
Rob Fleming says the selection of the preferred proponent for the tunnel project, Cross Fraser Partnership, means design plans can now be finalized.

Haryana's farmer leader Gurnam Singh Chaduni has announced his candidates for the by-elections to be held in the four assembly seats of Punjab.
Chaduni said that his United Struggle Party will contest the by-elections in 4 constituencies Giddarbaha, Barnala, Dera Baba Nanak and Chabewal of Punjab and apart from this, elections will be contested in all 90 seats of Haryana.

Calgary loosening outdoor water restrictions as extreme heat continues
Calgary residents can now turn on their sprinklers for longer as the city swelters under an extreme heat warning.
