At least 49 people have died in flooding in South Africa, officials say

At least 49 people have died in flooding in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province after an extreme cold front brought heavy rain and snow to parts of the country, officials said Wednesday. Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane said the death toll was provided by police. The toll included six students who were washed away when their school bus was caught in floodwaters near a river on Tuesday, Mabuyane told journalists. He said four other students were missing. Mabuyane’s office had reported seven deaths in the floods on Tuesday.

SPS officers rescue two residents in suspicious overnight fire

Surrey Police Service (SPS) is investigating a suspicious overnight fire in Surrey’s Newton neighbourhood that has left two vehicles and one home damaged, and several residents displaced. Shortly before 1:45 am on June 11, 2025, SPS Frontline officers responded to reports from a resident in the 13400 block 64 Avenue that a house on his street was on fire. Officers quickly arrived and encountered two vehicles and the front of a house on fire and active explosions happening. Residents of a basement suite were able to safely be evacuated but officers were advised about two upstairs residents.
