British Columbia is providing relief funds to the Canadian Red Cross to help fight the current wave of COVID-19 in India.
"As the COVID-19 pandemic rages in India, its effects are being felt around the world," said Premier John Horgan. "The relief funds from B.C. will help deliver urgently needed medical equipment and technical support for public health operations in communities across the country. For those with family in India, we stand with you during these challenging times."
The Government of British Columbia is providing $500,000 to the Canadian Red Cross, which is offering support to the Indian Red Cross Society to deliver assistance to communities affected or at risk of being affected by COVID-19.
"The pandemic has been devastating to people and families here in British Columbia and around the world, with India currently being severely impacted," said Pat Quealey, vice-president for B.C. and Yukon, Canadian Red Cross. "The funding announced today by the Government of British Columbia will help save countless lives by providing essential care and supplies to assist people in India who are affected or at risk of being affected by COVID-19."
The aid from British Columbia is in addition to $10 million provided by the federal government to the Canadian Red Cross to support the Indian Red Cross Society. Canada's contribution will support the procurement of essential supplies and medicines, including oxygen cylinders for clinics and ambulances.
