A 25-year-old driver is facing potential criminal charges after Abbotsford police say he was caught travelling nearly 200 kilometres per hour in an 80 km/h zone before crashing in Aldergrove late Tuesday night.

According to the Abbotsford Police Department, an officer conducting speed enforcement on Highway 11 near Townshipline Road shortly before 11 pm recorded a grey pickup truck moving at 198 km/h using a speed laser device. Police say the vehicle continued westbound along Downes Road, where speeds exceeded 200 km/h in a posted 60 km/h zone.

Additional officers were called to assist, and a spike belt was deployed at the intersection of Mt. Lehman Road and Downes Road in an effort to stop the truck. A short time later, the driver lost control and struck a light pole near 48 Avenue and 272 Street in Aldergrove. No injuries were reported.

Police said officers detected alcohol on the driver’s breath and arrested him for dangerous driving and refusing to provide a breath sample. Criminal charges have not yet been formally laid. The accused is scheduled to make a first court appearance on April 13 and has received an immediate 90-day driving suspension.

Abbotsford police say traffic enforcement remains a priority, noting that so far this year officers have removed 167 impaired drivers from local roads, impounded 57 vehicles for excessive speed and launched four dangerous driving investigations. Road safety continues to be a concern across the Fraser Valley, particularly in high-traffic corridors connecting Abbotsford and neighbouring communities.

Ontario MP Marilyn Gladu leaves Conservatives to join Liberals

Ontario MP Marilyn Gladu says she has left the Conservative caucus and will sit with the Liberals under Prime Minister Mark Carney, becoming the fifth member of Parliament to cross the floor since November. Gladu confirmed the move in a statement, saying she will support the government’s agenda going forward. The reasons for her decision were not immediately detailed, and it is not clear whether she will take on a formal role within the Liberal caucus. Floor crossings do not trigger a byelection under federal rules, meaning Gladu will continue to represent her Ontario riding as a Liberal MP
