Recent rain, cooler weather limiting spread of wildfires in Jasper National Park

Cool and wet weather is making a difference in Jasper National Park. The park posted a statement on X late Thursday night saying cooler temperatures and up to 15 millimetres of rain since midnight had led to minimal fire activity. The park says due to the rainfall, fire behaviour is likely to calm over the next 72 hours. While more rain is expected Friday, temperatures are supposed to return to the mid 20s by Saturday, which the park says will lead to an increase in fire activity. The townsite and park have been besieged by wildfires, with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith estimating Thursday a t

Wildfires menacing the town flared up into towering walls of flame Wednesday night, breaching defences and destroying homes and businesses. Critical infrastructure, including schools and the hospital, remain intact. About 25,000 people had to flee Jasper National Park ahead of the fires Monday, including

Remembering the Kargil War.....

Irrespective of the countries, politics keeps dancing on both sides of their borders. The love, culture and feelings of those people of that politics are covered. No matter how helpless this scent of love and emotion is, it rises above the folds of borders and the dance of politics and somehow reaches the people of one country to another. No matter how loud the noise of political slogans is, it cannot suppress this feeling, but the forces bound by the orders of the seat of power certainly point guns and guns at each other. Something similar happened during the Kargil war 25 years ago. I am an

McGill drops injunction case against pro-Palestinian camp after dismantling site

McGill University has withdrawn its injunction request against a pro-Palestinian encampment, a little more than two weeks after the school removed the collection of tents from its campus. All parties were due at the Montreal courthouse today for a hearing, but none of the lawyers showed. Later, lawyers for McGill and some of the protest groups confirmed the university had dropped the injunction request. On July 10, the university hired a private security firm to dismantle the encampment that had been in place on the school's lower field since late April. In mid-May, the university failed to se

Conservatives table bill to make murdering an intimate partner a first-degree crime

The Conservatives have introduced a private members’ bill in the House of Commons that would make the murder of an intimate partner a first-degree crime. Conservative public safety critic Frank Caputo says the bill would treat such crimes the way the Criminal Code currently treats the murder of a peace officer. Caputo told a press conference on Parliament Hill today the bill would create a new offence of assaulting an intimate partner. He says the bill would also create a mechanism for judges to order a risk assessment of an individual charged with intimate partner violence who is on release

Ontario premier urges Carney to maintain tariff on Chinese EVs despite canola levy

Ontario Premier Doug Ford is calling on Prime Minister Mark Carney to maintain Canada's 100 per cent tariff on Chinese electric vehicles, saying the measure is critical to securing a trade deal with the U.S. and protecting Canada's auto sector. Carney met with Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe yesterday to talk about China's canola tariffs, which are largely seen as a retaliatory measure triggered by the electric vehicle tariff. China charges a 76 per cent tariff on Canadian canola seed imports and a 100 per cent tariff on canola oil, meal and peas. Ford's open letter to the prime minister, relea
