Calgary official compares strain on water system to revving car's engine for too long

As daily water use in Calgary remains above target during repairs to a major feeder main, a city official warns the effect on pumps and other infrastructure is like a car's engine running too hard for too long. Calgary's director of climate and environment, Carolyn Bowen, said in a video update on the city's water situation Sunday that when water use is above the 485-million-litre-per-day target, preventative maintenance becomes challenging. The city used 496 million litres of water on Saturday, and was above 500 million litres in the days before that. The city says it's on track t

Employer considers union plan in week two of Metro Vancouver HandyDART transit strike

Most services for Metro Vancouver's specialized HandyDART transit system remain cancelled for a second week, with the operator saying it will respond to a new proposal from the union representing striking workers on Thursday. TransDev Canada says that's when talks were "previously scheduled" to resume, and no agreements were reached in Sunday's initial mediated talks. Joe McCann, president of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1724, says it's disappointed as it was willing to negotiate around the clock for its riders, accusing Transdev of lacking the same urgency. Devastating Jasper wildfire now listed as under control, Parks canada says

Nearly seven weeks since a wildfire forced the evacuation of Jasper National Park and burned nearly a third of the townsite's structures, Parks Canada says the blaze is now officially under control. Landon Shepherd, incident commander with the parks agency, told an online media briefing Saturday the change in status means the fire has been sufficiently suppressed to ensure it won't spread outside of its defined perimeter. Shepherd says that perimeter is 278 km long. The fire's status was last changed on Aug. 17 when it moved from being out-of-control to ``being held,'' which meant it wasn't

Conservatives table bill to make murdering an intimate partner a first-degree crime

The Conservatives have introduced a private members’ bill in the House of Commons that would make the murder of an intimate partner a first-degree crime. Conservative public safety critic Frank Caputo says the bill would treat such crimes the way the Criminal Code currently treats the murder of a peace officer. Caputo told a press conference on Parliament Hill today the bill would create a new offence of assaulting an intimate partner. He says the bill would also create a mechanism for judges to order a risk assessment of an individual charged with intimate partner violence who is on release

Ontario premier urges Carney to maintain tariff on Chinese EVs despite canola levy

Ontario Premier Doug Ford is calling on Prime Minister Mark Carney to maintain Canada's 100 per cent tariff on Chinese electric vehicles, saying the measure is critical to securing a trade deal with the U.S. and protecting Canada's auto sector. Carney met with Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe yesterday to talk about China's canola tariffs, which are largely seen as a retaliatory measure triggered by the electric vehicle tariff. China charges a 76 per cent tariff on Canadian canola seed imports and a 100 per cent tariff on canola oil, meal and peas. Ford's open letter to the prime minister, relea
