Canada pledges $5.7M in humanitarian aid for Ukraine, with focus on children
International Development Minister Ahmed Hussen says Canada will provide $5.7 million for Ukrainians to meet their basic needs.
Ottawa says it's maintaining solidarity with Ukraine two-and-a-half years into Russia's full-scale invasion as Hussen visits Kyiv.
The trip has a focus on children, with Hussen visiting the main children's hospital, which was damaged by a Russian missile in July.
The funding includes $2 million for Save the Children Canada, which has helped Ukrainian kids with food, education and psychosocial support.

Eby pledges $300M towards 1,508-bed student housing project at UBC
Premier David Eby says the province and University of British Columbia will partner to create housing for more than 1,500 students at the institution's Vancouver campus.
He says funding will involve $300 million from the province and $260 million from the university.
The 1,508-bed project will include five buildings ranging from eight to 18 storeys.
Construction is slated to start in the fall of 2026 with spaces opening for students in 2028.
Eby says the student housing project is part of the government's target of building 12,000 student beds by 2028.

T-Series announced to make a film on former cricketer Yuvraj Singh
A film is going to be made on the life of Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh. Bhushan Kumar's production company T-Series has announced this.
The name of the film has not been decided yet. According to the press release, the film will showcase important moments from Yuvraj Singh's cricketing career and personal life.
Its story will be about Yuvraj hitting six sixes off six balls in the 2007 T20 World Cup, his battle with cancer and then his return to the world of cricket.

BJP declared Ravneet Bittu as Rajya Sabha candidate from Rajasthan
It has been decided to send Punjab BJP leader and Union Minister of State Ravneet Singh Bittu to the Rajya Sabha. BJP is sending him to Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan. Bittu's name was approved in the BJP high command meeting on Tuesday.
The last date for filing nominations for the Rajya Sabha elections is August 21. Bittu will file nomination tomorrow itself. Ravneet Bittu, a two-time Member of Parliament from Ludhiana, left the Congress and joined the BJP before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Israeli military says it has recovered the bodies of 6 hostages in a Gaza operation
The Israeli military says it has recovered the bodies of six hostages taken in Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack that started the Gaza war.
The military said in a statement Tuesday that its forces recovered the bodies in an overnight operation in southern Gaza.

Legault announces six-month freeze on some temporary foreign workers in Montreal
Quebec Premier François Legault is announcing a six-month freeze on certain temporary foreign worker applications in Montreal.
The premier says the moratorium will apply to new applications and renewals, but nurses, teachers, construction workers, food transformation workers and those making at least $57,000 a year will be exempt.
Legault says the total number of temporary immigrants across the province has doubled to 600,000 from 300,000 in just two years, putting a strain on housing as well as social services such as health and education.

Canada’s inflation rate fell to 2.5% in July, lowest since March 2021
Canada’s annual inflation rate fell to 2.5 per cent last month, matching forecasters’ expectations as price pressures continue to retreat.
Tuesday’s consumer price index report says prices for travel tours, passenger vehicles and electricity helped drive the headline figure lower.
Meanwhile, shelter costs are still the main driver of inflation as Canadians face significantly higher rents and mortgage payments.
The federal agency noted, however, that shelter price growth slowed last month to 5.7 per cent year-over-year, down from 6.2 per cent in June.

B.C. film company fined for flying drone too close to killer whales
A Vancouver-based film company and its drone operator have been fined a total of $30,000 for operating a drone too close to northern resident killer whales.
A statement from Fisheries and Oceans Canada says the fines follow an investigation by the department's whale protection unit.
It says River Road Films pleaded guilty in July to unlawfully capturing footage by operating too close to a pod of whales "beach rubbing" on Vancouver Island.
