Calgary Stampede rodeo safety to include shaded pens, heart monitors for horses
Tents are being set up to provide shade for bulls and broncs, and some chuckwagon horses are to be fitted with tiny electrocardiograms at the upcoming Calgary Stampede.
Ed Pajor (PAY'-jor) is a professor of animal behaviour and welfare in the University of Calgary's faculty of veterinary medicine. The university is working with the Stampede to study some of the animals this year.

Canada may have to spend $150-billion on defense alone under NATO's new target
Canada may have to spend $150-billion annually on defense alone under NATO's new target. Prime Minister Mark Carney said this in an interview during a NATO meeting in the Netherlands.
The prime minister said he hopes that a meeting of NATO leaders on Wednesday, which will also be attended by President Donald Trump, will agree to give 10 years to reach this target.
The prime minister also said that he will not spend indiscriminately and hopes that NATO will review this target. It is noteworthy that in Wednesday's meeting, NATO countries are expected to increase military spending to 5 percen

Drugs, guns, explosives found during Street Crew Unit investigation
Prince George RCMP’s Street Crew Unit has once again made a sizeable dent in the illicit drug subculture in Prince George, executing search warrants at multiple locations throughout the city on June 6 and 7, 2025.
During the searches, police officers located nearly 20 kilograms combined of suspected cocaine, methamphetamine, MDMA and Ketamine; over one dozen cases of contraband cigarettes and several high-powered firearms and handguns with ammunition.

Brampton man charged after CBSA seizes 187 kg of cocaine at the Blue Water Bridge
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced today a significant seizure of cocaine at the Blue Water Bridge port of entry in Point Edward, Ontario.
On June 12, 2025, a commercial truck arrived from the United States at the Blue Water Bridge port of entry and was referred for a secondary examination. During the inspection of the trailer, border services officers, with the assistance of a detector dog, discovered 161 bricks of suspected cocaine contained in 6 boxes. The total weight of the suspected narcotics was 187 kg, with an estimated street value of $23.3 million.

Canada men's team beat 6th ranked Austria in 3X3 Basketball world cup
The Canadian men's team recorded one win and one loss today at the FIBA 3X3 Basketball World Cup being played in Mongolia. The Canadian team recorded a victory today against Austria, which is ranked higher than them.
The 17th ranked Canadian team won against the 6th ranked Austria by a margin of 22-19. However, in another match played today, the Canadian team had to face a defeat against China by a margin of 20-22.
The Canadian team will face Olympic silver medalist France on Thursday.

Nigerian judge convicts man of sextorting B.C. teen who died by suicide
Nigeria's financial crimes agency says a man who tried to blackmail a Surrey, B.C., teenager by posting his intimate images online has been sentenced to prison terms totalling 76 years.
RCMP have said that the boy's sudden death in 2023 came after he fell victim to "financial sextortion."

Inflation holds steady at 1.7% in May as rent hikes cool
The annual pace of inflation held steady at 1.7 per cent in May as cooling shelter costs helped tame price pressures, Statistics Canada said Tuesday.
Shelter costs rose three per cent in May, StatCan said, marking a slowdown from 3.4 per cent in April.
The agency singled out Ontario as the major source of rent relief in the country. Slowing population growth and a jump in new supply helped dampen rent hikes in May.
Mortgage interest costs meanwhile decelerated for the 21st consecutive month amid lower interest rates from the Bank of Canada.

More than 100 people on Canadian chartered flight leaving Middle East tonight: Anand
Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand says a Canadian chartered flight will leave Jordan this evening with more than 100 people on board.
Speaking from The Hague, Anand says Canada is also helping allied nations get their citizens out of the Middle East but adds the number of foreign nationals asking for help is "minimal" compared to the number of Canadians.
Global Affairs Canada deployed more consular assistance to the region after war broke out between Israel and Iran last week.
Anand says Global Affairs Canada has helped more than 500 Canadians in the region since the conflict began.

Canada's 3x3 Women begin the World Cup with back-to-back wins
Canada's 3x3 Women's National Basketball Team has made a strong start to the FIBA 3x3 World Cup 2025. The Canadian team won both of its first matches today.
The Canadian team defeated Latvia 17-10 in their first match.
In the second match, Canada faced Austria. Canada won the match by a margin of 20-15.
Saicha Grant Allen’s performance for Canada today was tremendous, as she yielded a total of 15 points today for Canada.
