Alberta premier needs to step down immediately: Brian Jean

Jason Kenney's main caucus critic says the Alberta premier needs to step down immediately after announcing plans last night to resign. Kenney did not say when he would leave when he made the announcement after getting only 51.4 per cent support in a United Conservative Party leadership review. But Brian Jean (GENE) says an interim leader needs to be selected immediately ahead of the leadership race. Jean -- who lost the leadership in 2017 and plans to run again --says Kenney knows the healing process can't start until he leaves.

Kenney will remain in the job until a new UCP leader is chosen

Alberta Premier Jason Kenney says he will remain in the job until a new United Conservative Party leader is chosen. This decision came just a day after he announced that he was stepping down for the good of his party. Earlier yesterday, some of Kenney's caucus critics called for him to step down immediately to help heal divisions wracking the party. Kenney announced his departure Wednesday night after receiving 51 per cent support in a mail-in ballot of party members. Opposition N-D-P Leader Rachel Notley says Kenney is now officially a caretaker leader, further delaying crucial work on issues

Jason Kenney joins list of past Alberta premiers to resign amid party strife

Alberta Premier Jason Kenney announced Wednesday that he is stepping down as United Conservative leader after winning 51.4 per cent support from members in a leadership review. Under party rules, a simple majority would have been enough to keep his job. But Kenney said the result did not show enough support for him to stay on as leader. Here are some past Alberta premiers who resigned amid party strife: Ralph Klein — (1992-2006): The folksy one-time Calgary mayor led Alberta's Progessive Conservatives to four straight majority governments. But toward the end of his tenure, Klein's popularity

UCP begins search for new leader with Jason Kenney stepping down

The race for a new United Conservative Party leader is gearing up after Alberta Premier Jason Kenney announced he’s stepping down. Kenney garnered 51.4 per cent support in a review of his leadership, which is just enough for him to keep his job under party rules. But on Wednesday night he said that result isn’t good enough for him to stay on as leader and that many members have asked for the opportunity to clear the air. Two former leaders of the Wildrose Party, which merged with the Progressive Conservatives to form the UCP in 2017, have signalled they intend run for the leadership. Brian

Alberta utilities watchdog denies company's offer of 'refund' on consumer bills

The Alberta Utilities Commission says the small cash payout proposed by AltaLink would ultimately cost consumers millions more than it returned. AltaLink, Alberta's largest electricity transmitter, had asked the commission to allow it to offer a 120-million-dollar refund that would have averaged about 5-dollars a month for residential customers. But the commission pointed out the refund would have been financed by a loan, not cash. And it says and the interest and other charges on that money meant the true cost of the refund was about 250 million dollars --money the company would have recouped

Melanie Joly Demands Stelco Reinstate Laid-Off Workers Before Talks

Canada’s Industry Minister Mélanie Joly has sent a strongly worded letter to Stelco President Paul Simon, demanding the immediate reinstatement of laid-off workers at the Ontario-based steelmaker. Joly said she is willing to meet with Stelco representatives and Lourenco Goncalves, CEO of its U.S. parent company, Cleveland-Cliffs. However, she made it clear that reinstating the laid-off workers would be a precondition for any discussions. Criticizing Goncalves, Joly said the company cannot use U.S. tariffs, which are hurting businesses on both sides of the border, as an excuse for the layoff
