Edmonton Mayor Amarjeet Sohi says the city has delivered with a plan for a centre where social workers, firefighters and peace officers could work together to reduce crime, and now it is time for the province to step up. City council voted unanimously yesterday to ask the government of Alberta to support the creation of a hub in Edmonton's Chinatown. In May, Justice Minister Tyler Shandro used his ministerial power to demand a report from the city on what is being done to get crime under control. Edmonton police officers have already increased their presence in problem areas.

The BC Prosecution Service says a suspect arrested following a shooting at the Williams Lake Stampede has been charged with attempted murder. Jordell Sellars has also been charged with discharging a firearm with intent to endanger life. RCMP say two people were taken to hospital in what they say was a brazen shooting at the stampede grounds yesterday afternoon. Staff Sergeant Darren Dodge says in a release that police believe it was a targeted shooting but one innocent bystander was also wounded.

Highland Park's police chief said the 22 year old man identified as a person of interest in the shooting that killed at least six people, wounded at least 30 and send hundreds of people fleeing from an Independence Day parade in suburban Chicago has been taken into custody. Canada Border Services says it found more than 50 bricks of drugs when officers searched a truck trying to cross from the United States at the Aldergrove border crossing. The agency says officers noticed that some pallets had been tampered with when they searched the truck last month. They found 50 kilograms of suspected cocaine and one kilo of heroin. The RCMP has taken over the investigation and no charges have been announced.

An 18 year old Quebec student who was visiting BC as part of a school group has been critically injured in a bus crash near Castlegar. RCMP say the teen and 15 other Quebec students were aboard a transit bus near Castlegar last Thursday when the bus was side-swiped by a delivery van, severely injuring the teen who was sitting beside the window where the van hit. The other students, who were taking part in a program at Selkirk College, kept their injured friend alive until help arrived and police say she has been transferred to hospital in Kelowna, where she remains on life-support but is not e

The Alberta government is expanding its support for Ukrainians coming to the province from the war-ravaged country. Premier Jason Kenney says there's a special, deep connection between Alberta and Ukraine.
