Freeland resigns from cabinet as she takes on new role as special envoy to Ukraine

While Freeland announced her resignation as transport minister on social media today, she will remain in the House of Commons as an MP until the next election. She left today's regular cabinet meeting smiling and talking with Carney, but neither answered questions from reporters stationed outside the room. Freeland has been one of the most prominent government advocates for Ukraine on the world stage, and spearheaded efforts to seize Russian financial holdi

Hate crime legislation coming soon, bail and sentencing reform to follow: Fraser

Justice Minister Sean Fraser says he will introduce new hate crime legislation in the coming days, with reforms on bail and violent crime sentencing to follow. Fraser says the legislation will go beyond campaign commitments of protecting religious institutions from "obstruction and intimidation" and include measures for the broader community. During the election, the Liberals promised to make it a criminal offence to obstruct access to or threaten people visiting a place of worship, school or community centre. Police reports of hate crimes have been on the rise since the Oct. 7, 2023 Hamas att

The 23-year-old from Nanaimo, B.C., also eclipsed his own Canadian record as he defended his world title and added to his Olympic gold from the 2024 Paris Games. Robert Redford, Oscar-winning director, actor and indie patriarch, dies at 89

Robert Redford has died at 89. The Hollywood golden boy who became an Oscar-winning director, liberal activist and godfather for independent cinema died in Utah on Tuesday. His publicist didn't immediately provide a cause of death. After rising to stardom in the 1960s, Redford was one of the biggest stars of the '70s with such films as ``The Candidate,'' ``All the President's Men'' and ``The Way We Were.'' Redford played the wily outlaw opposite Paul Newman in 1969's ``Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,'' a box-office smash from which Redford's Sundance Institute and festival got its name.

Chrystia Freeland to leave cabinet for Ukraine envoy role: reports

Transport Minister Chrystia Freeland is expected to leave cabinet for a special envoy role with Ukraine, according to multiple media reports. The announcement could come as soon as later today. Freeland joined Prime Minister Mark Carney's cabinet meeting this morning in Ottawa but blew past the TV cameras and did not answer any questions about her political future. Freeland shook up Canadian politics late last year when she resigned as finance minister to former prime minister Justin Trudeau, a major blow that led to his resignation in January. Freeland sought Liberal Party leadership earlier

Alberta to Add Citizenship Markers to Driver’s Licences

She says the goal is also to protect democracy to make sure that only citizens vote. Smith says non-citizens like permanent residents who can get a driver's licences will not have any notation on their IDs. Alberta Health Care numbers will also be added to driver'

Alberta Could See Billions in Budget Surplus Amid High Oil Prices

The Alberta government is expected to record a budget surplus of billions of dollars this fiscal year, driven by higher crude oil prices. According to University of Calgary economics professor Trevor Tombe, the province has already accumulated a $3.8-billion surplus so far this fiscal year. He said every $1-per-barrel change in oil prices can make a difference of about $680 million to the provincial treasury. Tombe estimates that if oil prices remain above $66 per barrel, Alberta could end up with a surplus of around $6 billion, instead of the previously projected $9.4-billion deficit. Alberta

Trump says US will maintain ‘total control’ over Strait of Hormuz

U.S. President Donald Trump has once again claimed that the United States has “total control” over the Strait of Hormuz and said Washington intends to maintain that control. In a post on Truth Social on Wednesday, Trump described the U.S. Navy’s blockade as a “wall of steel” and said there was nothing Iran could do about it. His comments come as shipping traffic through the strategic waterway has dropped sharply. Only eight vessels passed through the Strait on Tuesday, compared with around 130 to 140 vessels per day before the war. Iran, meanwhile, says full maritime traffic through
