The Cannes Film Festival 2026 is set to highlight the richness of Indian regional cinema, with a significant focus on Punjabi films alongside Malayalam and Kannada entries. Scheduled from May 12 to May 23, this year's festival will showcase works from renowned directors like Pedro Almodovar, Asghar Farhadi, and James Gray.
While India lacks a contender for the Palme d’Or, several noteworthy films will represent the country through premieres and screenings in various sections.
1. Chardikala
Directed by Amarjit Singh Saron, the Punjabi film, also known as Zakhma Toh Chardikala Tak, features Ammy Virk and Roopi Gill. It will make its debut at the Marché du Film. The narrative revolves around a nurse whose life takes a turn after being wrongly implicated in a significant case. As she faces loneliness and adversity, she starts aiding families grappling with their own struggles. Following its Cannes showcase, the film is set for a theatrical release on May 29.
2. Balan: The Boy
From Malayalam filmmaker Chidambaram, known for Manjummel Boys, comes Balan: The Boy, also screening at the Marché du Film. This poignant tale, penned by Jithu Madhavan, follows a teenager's quest to find his missing mother, delving into themes of abandonment and resilience in a challenging environment.
3. Shadows of the Moonless Night
FTII student Mehar Malhotra's Punjabi short film, *Shadows of the Moonless Night, has been selected for La Cinef, the festival's official competition for emerging filmmakers. Formerly titled Parchave Masseah Rataan De, this 24-minute film depicts Rajan, a night-shift worker facing financial and emotional tribulations, leading to a gradual unraveling of his mental state.
4. Amma Ariyan
John Abraham's acclaimed Malayalam film Amma Ariyan, a hallmark of India's parallel cinema, has been restored in 4K and will feature in the Cannes Classics section. Released in 1986, it continues to resonate with audiences and critics alike.
Cannes 2026 promises to be a significant platform for showcasing the diversity and talent within Indian cinema, particularly emphasizing the vibrant Punjabi film industry.
