Bollywood actor Aamir Khan’s iconic movie Lagaan is heading back to theatres to commemorate its 25th anniversary.
The acclaimed sports drama, first released in June 2001, will return to the big screen for a limited run from June 12 to June 14. The announcement was made by Aamir Khan Productions through a social media post, inviting audiences to relive the cinematic experience that left a lasting impact on movie lovers across generations.
Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, Lagaan is set during British rule in India and follows a group of villagers who challenge their colonial rulers to a high-stakes cricket match in a bid to escape oppressive taxes. The film’s unique blend of sports, history and emotion helped it become a landmark production in Indian cinema.
The movie earned international recognition when it secured a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film at the 74th Academy Awards, bringing global attention to Indian storytelling. Along with critical praise, it also emerged as a major box-office success.
Featuring an ensemble cast led by Aamir Khan and Gracy Singh, the film also included performances from British actors Rachel Shelley and Paul Blackthorne, alongside veteran Indian actors Suhasini Mulay, Kulbhushan Kharbanda and Rajendra Gupta.
