Voting Preparations Accelerate for Alberta’s 10-Question Referendum

Preparations are ramping up for Alberta’s 10-question referendum, with Elections Alberta beginning to distribute special mail-in ballots ahead of the Oct. 19 vote.

Voters who have already registered for a special ballot will begin receiving their voting packages by mail. They can also choose to pick up their ballots in person. The special-ballot option is available to eligible Alberta voters who want to vote by mail.

The referendum will feature 10 questions covering immigration, constitutional reform and Alberta’s future within Canada. The 10th question asks voters to choose between keeping Alberta as a province of Canada or having the provincial government begin the legal process required to hold a future binding referendum on separation.

The remaining questions include five proposals related to greater provincial control over immigration and three constitutional reform questions.

Applications for special ballots will remain open until Oct. 9, while completed mail-in ballots must reach Elections Alberta by Oct. 16. Advance voting is scheduled for Oct. 13 to 17, followed by referendum day on Oct. 19.

Elections Alberta says the referendum will use separate, numbered and colour-coded ballots for each of the 10 questions.
