The Shiromani Akali Dal has refused to support the Congress-led alliance. The party said that there is no question of joining the alliance in which the Congress is. Shiromani Akali Dal senior leader Naresh Gujral said that Akali Dal can never support Congress involved in Operation Blue Star and 1984 anti-Sikh riots, this is our principled decision.

At the same time, about giving support to BJP-led NDA, Gujral said that BJP has to take the first step. He said that if we get any invitation from BJP, our core committee will take a decision but the India alliance will not be supported under any circumstances.
