Teachers staged a protest rally in Chandigarh on Friday, demonstrating against the Punjab government while pressing for action on their demands.
According to protesters at the rally, a large group of teachers attempted to march toward the Punjab Vidhan Sabha during the demonstration. Police deployed in the area set up barricades to stop the march.
Teachers tried to push past the barricades, after which police used tear gas shells and water cannons to disperse the crowd, according to information shared at the protest site. The confrontation led to a temporary standoff between demonstrators and police.
Angered by the police restrictions, the teachers began a sit-in protest at the location. Protesters also raised objections to the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET), calling it illegal and urging the government to address the issue.
Protest leaders said that if the Punjab government does not introduce a motion or reach an agreement on the issue during the Assembly session scheduled for the 16th, they plan to organize a larger protest on the 17th.
