Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is visiting Detroit, Michigan, today to advocate for tariff-free trade between Washington and Ottawa.
Before departing for the United States, Poilievre held a press conference in Windsor, Ontario, where he said he would visit a General Motors plant and meet with Ford representatives in Michigan. Conservative MPs from the Windsor region are accompanying him on the trip.
Speaking to reporters, Poilievre said the Canada-U.S. trade war is directly benefiting China and other foreign competitors. He stressed that both countries need to end the trade conflict.
The United States currently imposes a 25 per cent tariff on Canadian automobiles. President Donald Trump has threatened to increase the tariff to 50 per cent starting January 1 in response to Canada's retaliatory tariffs.
