The Kelowna RCMP have launched a new gang enforcement pilot program following several months of targeted policing that led to the seizure of firearms, weapons and illicit drugs across the city.
Police say enhanced enforcement efforts began in September 2025, focusing on disrupting organized crime and removing weapons and toxic drugs from local streets. Those initiatives resulted in multiple significant seizures, prompting the detachment to expand its approach through a dedicated gang enforcement team.
The new Kelowna Gang Enforcement Team is a four-member unit made up of officers from different sections within the detachment. RCMP say members were selected based on their experience and training in investigating organized crime and individuals involved in the illicit drug trade.
Police link the presence of toxic and illegal drugs to broader public safety concerns in Kelowna, including property crime, violence and social disorder. RCMP say targeting those involved in drug distribution is intended to reduce downstream impacts on neighbourhoods, businesses and vulnerable populations.
The team works alongside existing units such as the Drugs and Organized Crime Unit, Proactive Enforcement Unit, Crime Reduction Unit and criminal intelligence analysts to support an intelligence-led policing strategy.
The unit officially began operations on January 6, 2026. Two days later, officers conducted a proactive vehicle stop that led to the arrest of two people on outstanding warrants. Police say three firearms and illicit drugs were seized, with one suspect facing charges related to driving while prohibited and another facing new firearm-related charges.
“Organized crime and the drug trade affect every part of our community,” said Sgt. Scott Powrie of the Crime Reduction Unit. “By removing firearms, drugs and criminal influence, we are working to restore safety and confidence in Kelowna.”
