An Edmonton city councillor says he plans to seek a symbolic street renaming outside the Alberta legislature following the success of a pro-Canada petition campaign.
Coun. Michael Janz said he will submit an application to rename the portion of 99 Avenue directly in front of the legislature grounds to “Forever Canadian Avenue.” The proposed name references the “Forever Canadian” petition, which gathered enough signatures in December to advance under Alberta’s citizen initiative process.
According to the petition organizers, the proposed referendum question asks Albertans: “Do you agree that Alberta should remain within Canada?” Alberta’s legislature has not yet determined whether the question will proceed to a provincewide referendum this fall or instead be debated and voted on by MLAs.
Janz said the proposed street name would recognize what he described as a significant public response from Albertans supporting Canada’s federation. The announcement comes days after a judge dismissed a separate petition effort backed by an Alberta separatist group seeking a referendum on independence.
The proposed renaming would require approval through the City of Edmonton’s naming and municipal review process. It was not immediately clear when the application would be considered by council or administration.
