Canada's largest sugar processing plant is going to be established in Hamilton, Ontario. Major North American manufacturer Securecan Sourcing has revealed the plan.
The company said it will invest $135-million in the new refinery, which is expected to open in 2025. This refinery will produce about 10 lakh metric tons of sugar per year.
Sciurocan's Powder &c. E. oh Jonathan Taylor said recent demand for sugar is high amid a growing food processing sector and stable refining capacity in Canada and the US, particularly in Ontario, where sugar demand is growing the fastest in North America.
Canada has generally had lower production since September and B.C. Rogers Sugar's strike supply has been moderate. Rogers Sugar had proposed to run the refinery operation 24 hours throughout the year, over which the workers went on strike. Several sugar producers, including Rogers, have plans to expand.
According to the Canadian Sugar Institute, about 1.4 million tonnes of refined sugar were produced in the four provinces during 2022, with an estimated value of $1.4 billion.
