Almost half of the thousands of international students accepted by Canadian learning institutions have faced rejection from visa authorities in recent years.

This has been revealed in a report which says that between January 1, 2022 and April 30, 2023, the Department of Immigration approved only 54.3 percent of the 866,206 study permits approved by learning institutions, i.e. 470,427 applicants. Immigration officials say applications are considered on a case-by-case basis based on the information provided by the applicant for a study permit.

Some applicants do not meet the financial requirement for studies and some due to incomplete application, wrong documents and various other reasons. It is to be noted that Canada is the top destination for international students.

The number of study permit holders has tripled over the past decade, from 300,000 in 2013 to nearly 900,000 in 2023.

Canada’s proposed under-16 social media ban likely to face Charter challenge

Experts say Canada’s proposed ban on social media access for children under 16 could face a constitutional challenge under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The issue has gained attention after France’s top court recently struck down a similar ban for children under 15, ruling that the measure was too broad and infringed on freedom of expression. Dalhousie University associate law professor Michael Karanicolas said a Charter challenge to Canada’s legislation is “almost inevitable.” He argued that social media has become an important platform for young people to participate
