Travis Toews to run upcoming UCP leadership race_CP

Alberta Finance Minister Travis Toews has officially entered the leadership contest to replace Jason Kenney as United Conservative Party leader and premier.

Toews has not made a formal announcement, but has registered his candidacy on the Elections Alberta website.

He could not be immediately reached for comment, but said last week he was considering a run.

Toews is a first-term legislature member from the constituency of Grande Prairie-Wapiti and has been finance minister since the start of Kenney's government in April 2019.

UCP backbencher Brian Jean and Danielle Smith _ both former Wildrose Party leaders _ have said they will run for Kenney's job, but have not yet moved to make it official.

The party is working out the logistics of a vote and has not announce a date or any other details.

RCMP investigate suspicious death at Peace River gas station

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police say a man is dead after an incident at a gas station in northern Alberta that investigators are treating as suspicious. According to an RCMP news release, officers were called to a Petro-Canada location in Peace River on Thursday morning, where they found a man deceased near the fuel pumps. Police have not released the victim’s identity. Investigators say surveillance video from the scene shows a suspect entering the driver’s seat of a red Dodge Caravan taxi and striking the victim with the vehicle. Canadian astronaut Joshua Kutryk assigned to first space mission aboard SpaceX Crew-13

Canadian astronaut Joshua Kutryk is scheduled to travel to the International Space Station later this year as part of NASA’s SpaceX Crew-13 mission, according to a Canadian Space Agency news release.
