A fine of Rs 1026 crore has been levied on the Punjab government. This penalty has been imposed by the National Green Tribunal for not taking concrete steps to manage old waste and sewage disposal in the state and ordered to deposit this huge amount within a month. It will not be easy for the state government to pay this fine.
In its order, the NGT reprimanded the state government and said that there is currently 53.87 lakh tons of old garbage in Punjab, in two years the state government has been able to dispose of only 10 lakh tons of garbage, if the work continues at the same pace. It will take 10 years to settle it.
