Canadian Softwood Industry Faces Major Blow from US

The Canadian softwood industry is bracing for a significant challenge as reports suggest that the U.S. Department of Commerce may increase anti-dumping duties on Canadian softwood lumber. Currently, most Canadian producers are paying a 7.66% anti-dumping duty on lumber shipments to the U.S. However, this rate could rise to as much as 20%. The new duty rate is expected to take effect in August. The anti-dumping duty is being raised because the U.S. alleges that Canadian producers are selling softwood lumber in the U.S. at prices below market value. Jagmeet Singh Criticizes Trump Over Ukraine

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh has criticized former U.S. President Donald Trump over his stance on Ukraine. In a statement, Singh condemned the exclusion of Ukraine from peace talks involving Russia and the United States, calling it deeply wrong. He argued that this approach reflects the U.S. under Trump leaning toward divisive policies and instability. Singh emphasized that Canada must stand firm against threats to democracy and work to promote peace. It is notable that a high-level meeting was recently held in Saudi Arabia between Russia and the United States to address the ongoing war in Ukrain

The wreck of a crashed Delta Air Lines jet has been cleared from a runway at Toronto's Pearson International Airport. The airline says removing the wreckage took several hours on Wednesday. Delta says it could be weeks before bags from the plane are returned to their owners because of the inspection and cleaning process. The airline has offered US$30,000 in compensation to passengers who were on the plane, saying the money "has no strings attached." All 76 passengers and four crew members survived when Delta Flight 4819 crash landed at Pearson on Monday. Agencies including the Transportation S

Pat King Sentenced to House Arrest for Role in 2022 COVID Restrictions Protests

Pat King, one of the organizers of the 2022 protests against COVID restrictions in Canada, has been sentenced to three months of house arrest by an Ottawa court today. In addition to house arrest, King has also been sentenced to 100 hours of community service at a food bank and a men's shelter. Ottawa purchases 500,000 bird flu vaccine doses to help protect people most at risk

The federal government says it has purchased 500,000 doses of bird flu vaccine to ensure Canada is ready for potential health threats. The Public Health Agency of Canada says it secured supplies of GSK's human vaccine against avian influenza. PHAC says 60 per cent of available doses will go to provinces and territories while 40 per cent will be kept in a federal stockpile. It does not recommend broad vaccine deployment, noting the shot is meant for people who may be at increased risk, such as those who have ongoing contact with infected animals and their environments. Otherwise it says risk to

Canada’s economy contracts in October as manufacturing and public sector activity slow

Canada’s real gross domestic product declined by 0.3 per cent in October, according to new data from Statistics Canada, as weakness in manufacturing and parts of the public sector weighed on overall economic activity. The federal agency said goods-producing industries fell by 0.7 per cent during the month, with manufacturing responsible for nearly the entire drop. The slowdown follows earlier signs of easing demand and supply chain adjustments across several manufacturing subsectors. Public sector activity also declined, partly reflecting the impact of Alberta’s provincewide teachers’ st
