Fire displaces about 100 residents from Mission retirement home
About 100 residents of a Mission retirement residence were displaced after a large fire broke out at the building Monday evening, according to the City of Mission.
Emergency crews from the Mission Fire and Rescue Service, Mission RCMP and BC Emergency Health Services responded to Chartwell Carrington House shortly before 6 p.m. on March 9 after a fire started inside the retirement residence on 7th Avenue. First responders entered the building and helped elderly residents evacuate as flames spread.

Abbotsford police searching for suspects after woman reports sexual assault
Police in Abbotsford say they are investigating after a woman reported she was taken to a rural area against her will and sexually assaulted by four men earlier this month.
According to a release from the Abbotsford Police Department, the woman told investigators she was picked up by four men on Feb. 10 near the intersection of Cannon Avenue and Bevan Avenue in Abbotsford.
Police say the woman reported that the men then drove her to the Sumas Mountain area and refused to let her leave the vehicle. Investigators say she was sexually assaulted at that location.

Conservatives propose bill to remove barriers on interprovincial alcohol sales
Canada’s Conservative Party says it is pushing to remove federal barriers that limit the sale and delivery of Canadian alcohol between provinces.
Conservative MP Dan Albas has introduced a private member’s bill that proposes amendments to the Canada Post Corporation Act. The changes would allow Canadian breweries, wineries and distilleries to ship products directly to consumers across provincial borders using Canada Post.

Nine people detained after police deploy emergency team during Abbotsford shooting call
Police in Abbotsford say nine people were detained after officers responded to a reported shooting Tuesday night at a home in the 33500 block of Cannon Avenue.
According to a news release from the Abbotsford Police Department, patrol officers were called to the area at about 8:00 p.m. and quickly identified a residence known to police that investigators believe is connected to the incident.

Cranbrook RCMP investigate targeted shooting at residence on 3rd Avenue South
Cranbrook RCMP say they are investigating a shooting that targeted a residence Sunday night in the city’s downtown area.
Police said officers were called at about 9:22 p.m. on March 8 to a report of gunfire at a home in the 300 block of 3rd Avenue South. According to an RCMP news release, investigators located evidence consistent with gunshots and secured the area to allow forensic examination. No injuries were reported.

Suspect arrested after ATM stolen in Abbotsford business break-in, police say
A man is in custody after an ATM was stolen during a break and enter at a business in Abbotsford late Sunday night, according to the Abbotsford Police Department.
Police say officers responded at about 9:09 p.m. to a report of a break-in at a business in the 36300 block of Auguston Parkway in the city’s McKee area. According to police, suspects had already fled by the time officers arrived. The business sustained damage during the incident and an ATM was reported stolen.

Premier Eby tours progress at the new Surrey hospital and BC Cancer Centre construction site
Premier David Eby was in Surrey today. At around 10 a.m., he toured the new Surrey Hospital and BC Cancer Centre, being built near 180 Street and James Hill Drive in Surrey.
He held technical discussions with trades team and the hospital representatives regarding construction works and the hospital.

B.C. legislature passes Trade Recognition Act allowing goods sold in Canada to be sold in province
The British Columbia legislature has passed Bill 5, the Trade Recognition Act, with support from all parties, a move the provincial government says will reduce interprovincial trade barriers and expand market access for businesses.
The legislation allows goods and services that are legally sold in another Canadian province or territory to be sold in British Columbia without requiring duplicate provincial certification, according to the Ministry of Jobs, Economic Development and Innovation.

Coroner says B.C. teen drowned after dingo attack on Australian island
An Australian coroner says a 19-year-old woman from British Columbia drowned after being attacked by a pack of dingoes during an early morning walk on an island off Queensland.
Piper James was on a backpacking trip and had been working on K'Gari, formerly known as Fraser Island, when she died on Jan. 19.
According to the Coroners Court of Queensland, a forensic pathologist with Queensland Health determined James drowned after sustaining multiple injuries during the attack. A spokesperson for the coroner said the injuries occurred “due to or as a consequence of” the dingo attack.
