Electricity demand in British Columbia is expected to climb close to record summer levels as high temperatures coincide with the start of FIFA Club World Cup matches this weekend.
According to BC Hydro, temperatures are forecast to peak over the next two to three days, with electricity demand expected to reach about 8,500 megawatts on Monday.
The utility said the highest summer demand on record was set in August 2025, when electricity use reached 8,652 megawatts.
BC Hydro said the provincial power system is prepared to handle the increased load and that sufficient generating capacity is available to meet customer demand during the hot weather period.
