At least 49 people have died in flooding in South Africa, officials say
At least 49 people have died in flooding in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province after an extreme cold front brought heavy rain and snow to parts of the country, officials said Wednesday.
Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane said the death toll was provided by police.
The toll included six students who were washed away when their school bus was caught in floodwaters near a river on Tuesday, Mabuyane told journalists. He said four other students were missing.
Mabuyane’s office had reported seven deaths in the floods on Tuesday.

Man accused of plotting shooting at New York Jewish centre extradited to U.S.
The U.S. Justice Department says a Pakistani citizen who was living in Canada has been extradited to New York, where he's accused of plotting to carry out a mass shooting at a Jewish centre.
The RCMP arrested Muhammad Shahzeb Khan in Quebec last September.
The Mounties said at the time he was in the process of planning a deadly attack targeting Jewish people in the U.S. and was facing charges in Canada.
He is now charged in the U.S. with attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization and attempting to commit terrorism that transcends national boundaries.

Iran says it executed nine militants of the Islamic State group detained after a 2018 attack. The Iranian judiciary’s Mizan news agency announced the executions Tuesday.
It described the militants as being detained after they were involved in a clash with Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard that killed three Iranian troops.

Israel attacked docks in Yemen’s port city of Hodeida on Tuesday, the Houthi rebels said.The Houthis announced the attack via their al-Masirah satellite news channel.
They said the attack targeted docks there, without elaborating.There was no immediate acknowledgment of the attack from Israel.

Small plane crashes into ocean off San Diego with 6 people aboard
Authorities are investigating after a small plane crashed into the ocean 5 miles (8 kilometers) off the coast near San Diego with six people aboard.
U.S. Coast Guard officials said a debris field was discovered near Point Loma Sunday afternoon and began searching for the wreckage in an area where the water is about 200 feet (61 meters) deep.
The Federal Aviation Administration said the twin-engine Cessna 414 crashed around 12:30 p.m. Sunday not long after it took off. Flight tracking website, Flightaware.com, showed that the plane was bound for Phoenix.

Trump's new travel ban takes effect amid escalating tension over immigration enforcement
President Donald Trump's new ban on travel to the U.S. by citizens from 12 mainly African and Middle Eastern countries took effect on Monday.
The new proclamation, which Trump signed on Wednesday, also imposes new travel restrictions on people from seven additional countries who are outside the U.S. and don't have a valid visa.

Two Canadians among seven men arrested in Australia over massive drugs bust
Investigative agencies in Australia have arrested 7 people, including two Canadians, in a drug trafficking case. It is alleged that the gang was using trusted people in Australia to help in the smuggling of drugs such as cocaine and methamphetamine.
The Australian Federal Police has said that the ages of the detained Canadians are 24 and 31 years old but have not released their identities yet. According to the agency, the two Canadians have been charged with joining a criminal group and attempting to smuggle drugs across the border.
