Minnesota trial set for Florida man in human smuggling case

A Florida man will go on trial July 18th in Minnesota on human smuggling charges after four migrants from India froze to death during a blizzard while trying to walk from Manitoba into the US. Steve Shand is charged with bringing two people into the US illegally and illegally transporting them once in the country. Four bodies were discovered near Emerson, five Indian nationals were found on foot on the Minnesota side of the border and two others were discovered nearby riding in Shand's van. Shand was not charged in the deaths of the migrants.

B.C. ends quarantine program for temporary foreign workers, self-isolation continues

The British Columbia Agriculture Ministry says it is ending the COVID-19 quarantine program for temporary foreign workers but will keep a different program for another year to support self-isolation to curb the spread of the virus. The ministry says the program for seasonal agriculture workers ends Thursday because of the easing of federal travel restrictions and high vaccination rates for incoming workers that allows them to go directly to their farms. First sensor in Canada's new earthquake warning system installed in Vancouver's Horseshoe Bay

The first sensor in Canada's new earthquake warning system has been installed in Vancouver's Horseshoe Bay. About 400 of the censors will be installed mainly in BC along the coast in the system expected to be operational by 2024. Natural Resources Canada says the sensors will detect the initial jolt of an earthquake, alerting people before slower and often more damaging waves come seconds later. An outreach officer with the program says that few seconds can give people time to cover and protect themselves from falling debris.

Calgary police asking for information as a vehicle drives into a driveway, pins a pedestrian

Calgary police are asking anyone with information about an incident where a vehicle drove into a driveway and pinned a pedestrian to contact them. Police say the 28 year old victim remains in serious but stable condition in hospital after being pinned between the vehicle and a building wall just after 2 am on Saturday. They say the driver of the green, 1996, four-door Honda fled the scene but the vehicle was found later found abandoned. Police say the two men and one woman who were believed to be in the vehicle remain unaccounted for.
