The first sensor in Canada's new earthquake warning system has been installed in Vancouver's Horseshoe Bay.

About 400 of the censors will be installed mainly in BC along the coast in the system expected to be operational by 2024.

Natural Resources Canada says the sensors will detect the initial jolt of an earthquake, alerting people before slower and often more damaging waves come seconds later.

An outreach officer with the program says that few seconds can give people time to cover and protect themselves from falling debris.
