PM Carney announces new cabinet
The new government of Prime Minister Mark Carney was formed in Canada on Tuesday. Governor General Mary Simon today swore in the new ministers and the ministers whose portfolios have changed at Rideau Hall. Carney's new cabinet now has 28 ministers. Of these, 13 are first-time MPs and in addition, 10 junior ministers have been made.
Melanie Jolly's portfolio has been changed from Foreign Affairs to Industry Minister and Anita Anand will now be Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs. Dominique LeBlanc has been given the responsibility of Canada-US Trade Minister.

Emergency crews drafting plans to welcome home residents forced out by wildfire
Emergency crews responding to an out-of-control wildfire north of Edmonton say they are getting plans ready for residents to return home. Officials from Sturgeon County have said the more than 32-square-kilometre blaze started earlier this month when an all-terrain vehicle caught fire after an apparent electrical or mechanical failure.
Dozens of homes were evacuated, and the county says responders are preparing to let residents return as soon as they deem the situation safe enough to do so. Until then, residents and the general public are being reminded to stay away from the evacuati

B.C.'s low snowpack, early-season melt raise drought concern: province
British Columbia's latest snowpack and water supply bulletin says drier, warmer weather last month has contributed to an early melt, raising concern for widespread drought this summer.
By early May, the bulletin says about five per cent of B.C.'s annual snowpack has typically melted, but 15 per cent had melted by the start of this month.
The bulletin from the province says snowpack was an average of 71 per cent of normal as of May 1, decreasing from 79 per cent of normal on April 1.

Missing two-year-old in Alberta found a kilometre from home after overnight search
RCMP say a toddler who disappeared from a home in northwestern Alberta has been found safe following an overnight ground and air search. Police say in a news release that officers with their Fairview detachment responded on Sunday night to a report of a missing two-year-old from a rural home in Clear Hills County.
Mounties called in reinforcements to help search for the child, including a search dog team, officers with drones, as well as firefighters.
They say more than 100 community volunteers also answered the call for help. The search ended happily shortly after 6 a.m. Monday

Saudi crown prince welcomes Trump to kingdom as US leader begins 4-day Middle East tour
President Donald Trump says at the start of his Middle East trip he believes he and Saudi Arabia's de facto ruler ``like each other a lot.''
Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman warmly greeted Trump after he landed Tuesday in Riyadh to start his four-day trip. Prince Mohammed has already committed to some $600 billion in new Saudi investment in the U.S., but Trump teases $1 trillion would be even better.

Alberta reports 39 new cases of measles, provincial total reaches 365
Alberta has reported 39 new cases of measles, bringing the provincial total to 365 since early March. The government says 30 of the new cases are in Alberta's south zone, which has seen more than half of all cases.
Nearly 300 of Alberta's total cases have been in youth under 18, with 114 cases reported in children under 5.
The government says that as of earlier this month 19 people have been hospitalized, with at least three children needing intensive care.

A man has been arrested over fire at British Prime Minister Starmer's private house
British police say they have arrested a man on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life over a fire at the London house where Prime Minister Keir Starmer lived before he was elected to lead the country.
The 21-year-old was arrested early Tuesday.
No one was injured in the blaze early Monday that damaged the door of the north London house.
Starmer does not currently live there. Sincetaking office in July, Starmer has lived with his family in the prime minister’s official Downing Street residence.

Alberta government freezes industrial carbon price
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says her government is freezing its industrial carbon price effective immediately at 95-dollars per tonne of emissions.The industrial carbon price had been scheduled to increase to 110 dollars next year and continue rising to 170 dollars per tonne by 2030.She says the freeze is critical to keep Albertan industry competitive and defend jobs during Canada's tariff fight with the United States.

Statistics Canada says Canadian-resident return trips from U.S. down again in April
Statistics Canada says preliminary figures for April continue to point to a sharp drop in return trips from the United States by Canadian residents.
The agency says the number of Canadian-residents returning by automobile from the United States in April fell on a year-over-year basis for the fourth consecutive month as it dropped 35.2 per cent to 1.2 million.
Canadians have cancelled trips to the U.S. in the wake of U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs on Canadian goods and his desire for Canada to become the 51st state.
