FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino says ‘ll resign from his role next month, bringing an end to a short and closely watched tenure as the bureau’s second-in-command. His departure had been widely anticipated following months of friction between FBI leadership and the U.S. Justice Department.
Bongino, a former Secret Service agent and conservative media personality, has faced scrutiny over public positions he held before joining the FBI, particularly his commentary on the handling of files related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Since taking office, Bongino has been required to reconcile those past claims with the constraints and responsibilities of federal law enforcement leadership.
The resignation marks one of the most prominent exits within President Donald Trump’s administration and comes at a time of heightened attention on the FBI’s senior leadership. Director Kash Patel has faced criticism over the reported use of a government aircraft for personal travel, as well as social media activity referencing ongoing investigations.
The changes at the top of the FBI have renewed debate in Washington over the agency’s independence and the challenges of appointing senior officials with strong public political profiles. Law enforcement experts say leadership stability is critical for maintaining public trust, particularly as the bureau continues to oversee high-profile national security and criminal investigations.
