A man brutally beaten in Calgary city park, police investigating
Calgary police are investigating after a man was found brutally beaten in a city park.
Officers and paramedics responded yesterday afternoon to reports of an assault in the northwest part of the city.
They found a man who had suffered significant injuries and he was taken to hospital by ambulance.
Witnesses told police they saw the man being hit with a baseball bat and kicked by two other people.

Oregon man accused of kidnapping, rape of Edmonton girl faces 3 new charges
An Oregon man accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a 13-year-old Edmonton girl is facing three new criminal charges in the United States.
Police allege Noah Madrano lured the girl through an online platform then abducted her and took her across the U-S border in June.
The girl was rescued on July 2nd when Madrano was arrested and taken into custody in Oregon City.
According to reports he now faces a total of eight charges, which include kidnapping, four sex-related charges, luring and two counts of using a child in display of sexually explicit conduct.

Alberta Premier Jason Kenney announces Tanya Fir as jobs minister after resignation
Premier Jason Kenney has announced a new jobs minister after the previous one resigned.
Kenney says in a statement that Tanya Fir will become the minister for jobs, economy and innovation and continue to serve as the associate minister of red tape reduction.
He says the legislature member for Calgary-Peigan has previously served in the portfolio, so she is ready to hit the ground running.
The vacancy came after Doug Schweitzer resigned from cabinet.
chweitzer has said he will also resign as the United Conservative Party legislature member for Calgary-Elbow by the end of the month.

Philippine ferry carrying 82 people catches fire; 40 rescued
A Philippine ferry carrying 82 passengers and crew caught fire as it was approaching a port south of Manila on Friday and at least 40 of those onboard have been rescued, coast guard officials said.
Search and rescue efforts were continuing after nightfall for the passengers and crew of the M/V Asia Philippines, an inter-island cargo and passenger vessel which came from nearby Mindoro island, the coast guard said.
A 44-year-old woman who was among those rescued was taken to a hospital with unspecified injuries.

Calgary Police investigating after body discovered near Banff Trail
Calgary police say they are investigating after a body was discovered near Banff Trail yesterday.
They say officers responded to reports of a man found unresponsive on a road around 3:20 p.m.
Police say paramedics arrived and declared the man deceased on scene.
Investigators are asking any witnesses or anyone with surveillance footage of the area to contact police.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg will be in Cold Lake, Alberta, today as they wrap up a visit focused on northern defences.
Yesterday they attended Operation Nanook, the country's largest Arctic military training operation, and toured a radar station in Nunavut.

Complex-care services planned for housing in Nanaimo
Substance users with serious mental health issues in Nanaimo are expected to get access to so-called complex-care housing under an initiative offering services like addiction medicine, social workers and education on overdose prevention.
