A big blow to Sadhu Singh Dharamsot from the High Court

The Punjab-Haryana High Court on Friday gave a big blow to the former Congress minister of Punjab Sadhu Singh Dharamsot by justifying his arrest by the ED in the forest scam case and rejected his petition against it. Along with this, they were granted bail on technical grounds in the case of property exceeding income. Dharamsot had challenged the arrest in both these cases as illegal. However, despite being granted bail in one case, Dharamsot will not be able to come out of jail, his custody will continue in the forest scam case. Dharamsot is currently lodged in Nabha Central Jail.

Shiromani Akali Dal targeted Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann

The Shiromani Akali Dal has targeted Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for his admission to Delhi's Apollo Hospital for treatment. The Shiromani Akali Dal said that the reality of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, who talked big about the revolution of health facilities in the state, is that due to non-payment of funds by the state government, the Ayushman health insurance scheme running for the treatment of the poor and needy is private. An agreement between First Nations and the British Columbia government will see thousands of homes made available in Vancouver at 40-per-cent below cost. Premier David Eby calls it a "remarkable" accomplishment between the province and the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations, which would see about 2,600 homes sold for 60 per cent of the value in one of the most expensive real estate markets in the world. The agreement would sell one-, two- and three-bedroom units in a 99-year-lease on First Nations land with the government financing the other 40 per cent of the value to be paid

Alberta ends fall sitting after sweeping use of notwithstanding clause draws scrutiny

Alberta’s fall legislative session closed this week with Premier Danielle Smith’s government advancing two major bills that relied heavily on the Charter’s notwithstanding clause, a move that has renewed debate over the limits of provincial authority and the protection of individual rights. The clause was applied four times in the sitting, shielding the legislation from certain court challenges for up to five years. The government first invoked the clause when it passed a law ordering more than 51 thousand public school teachers back to work following a three-week provincewide strike. Th

Advocacy groups shift legal strategy in bid to challenge Alberta’s gender care law

Two national advocacy organizations say they are pivoting their legal strategy as they continue efforts to challenge Alberta’s restrictions on gender-affirming care for youth. Egale Canada and the Calgary-based Skipping Stone Foundation launched a constitutional challenge last year after the province passed legislation prohibiting doctors from prescribing puberty blockers or hormone therapy to people under 16, and from performing gender-affirming top surgery on anyone under 18. The groups say the path through the Charter of Rights and Freedoms has become significantly more difficult since th
