Surrey Cloverdale MLA Eleanor Sturko is questioning federal and provincial authorities following reports that 10 foreign nationals were deported from Canada as part of investigations linked to extortion and organized crime.
Sturko cited information indicating that 296 foreign nationals were examined by authorities, with 10 ultimately removed from the country. She raised concerns that details have been publicly released in only one case, and said the lack of broader disclosure is troubling for communities affected by ongoing extortion threats.
According to available information, Arshdeep Singh, who arrived in Canada on a student visa in August 2022, was deported last December after investigators linked him to organized crime activity. The Edmonton Police Service had initially arrested him in connection with a theft at a shopping mall. Evidence recovered from his cellphone during that investigation allegedly connected him to incidents including arson in Ontario, a shooting in Edmonton, and extortion-related activity in Surrey.
Sturko said she is seeking answers from the joint task force and other agencies about the identities and status of the remaining nine individuals who were deported. She questioned why more detailed updates have not been provided, particularly for residents in Surrey and other communities who have faced repeated extortion attempts and violence over the past several years.
Extortion threats targeting members of the South Asian business community in British Columbia and Alberta have prompted multiple police investigations since 2023. Public safety officials have previously acknowledged the impact of these crimes on local businesses and community confidence. Sturko said affected communities deserve timely and transparent information about enforcement actions taken in response.
