Ontario's Solicitor General Michael Kerzner says he wants to see the return of mandatory minimum sentences for "serious crimes" and a "three-strikes" rule denying bail for repeat offenders.

Kerzner outlines his requests in an open letter sent to Justice Minister Sean Fraser and Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree this morning.

Fraser said last week that legislation on bail and sentencing reform is set to be introduced in the House of Commons next month.

The federal Conservatives have been calling for the implementation of a three-strikes rule to withhold bail from people convicted of multiple "serious" offences.

Kerzner's letter also calls for an end to time-served credits for pretrial detention in cases of "repeat and violent crimes."

The Liberals campaigned in the spring election on introducing stricter bail provisions for home invasions, auto theft, human trafficking, organized crime and violent crime.

Searchers look for missing boy, 5, last seen walking near Alberta campground

Searchers from Alberta and British Columbia have joined the effort to find a five-year-old boy who police say disappeared near a campground. RCMP say in a news release that Darius Macdougall was reported missing around 11:30 a.m., and was last seen walking with his family about four kilometres south of Crowsnest Pass near Island lake Campground in southern Alberta. Police investigate shooting in Northwest Surrey

Surrey Police Service (SPS) is investigating a shooting at a business in Northwest Surrey. On September 19, 2025, at approximately 8:35 am, Surrey Police Service received reports of a shooting near 108 Avenue and 125 Street, Surrey. The Liberal government has introduced legislation to create four new hate-related criminal offences.
