The City of Vancouver, in partnership with the Vancouver Police Department (VPD), local community volunteers and with financial commitment from the Province, has opened a new Community Policing Centre (CPC) to serve the Gastown and Hastings Crossing areas.

Located at 109 West Hastings Street, the Gastown-Hastings Crossing Community Policing Centre (GHX CPC) will be working to respond to local safety needs in a way that is proactive, collaborative and community led, with a focus on crime prevention, community education, volunteer involvement and community safety. The CPC is operated by an independent non-profit society that is staffed and governed by members of the community who work in partnership with the VPD. The CPC will act as a hub for residents, businesses, service providers and volunteers to work together on improving safety and wellbeing in the area.

“Community policing is about building real relationships and creating safer neighbourhoods by working hand-in-hand with residents, businesses, and service providers,” said Mayor Ken Sim. “The new Gastown-Hastings CPC will be a vital link between the community and the VPD, supporting proactive safety measures and a stronger sense of connection and well-being. On behalf of Council, I want to thank the community members who shared their time and insights to help shape this new CPC, and the dedicated volunteers who stepped up to serve on its first Board of Directors.”

“This CPC reflects the dedication of community members who care deeply about the safety and well-being of our neighbourhood,” said Devon Boorman, Board President of the Gastown Crossing Community Policing Society. “We’re proud to open our doors and begin working alongside residents, businesses and partners to build stronger connections and support positive change in the community.”

The Province contributed $1 million toward the GHX CPC, playing a vital role in its development.

The GHX CPC will offer crime prevention and outreach programs designed by staff and volunteers to meet the unique needs of the neighbourhoods it serves. Programs and services will include safety education, crime reporting, crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED), and initiatives such as community clean-ups, graffiti paint overs and neighbourhood safety walks and outreach.

There are 12 other community policing centres supporting community safety across the city. Learn more about the City’s community policing centres.

B.C. Government’s Decision to Shut Public Employee Directory Sparks Transparency Debate

The B.C. government’s decision under Premier David Eby to suddenly shut down its online directory of government employees to the general public has sparked a political controversy in the province. Opposition parties have accused the government of hiding information from the public and undermining transparency. The government, however, says the decision was made to protect employees’ safety, privacy and cybersecurity. Through the directory, members of the public could previously find out which employees worked in different government departments, their positions and how to contact them. Lan
