The Punjab and Haryana High Court has put a temporary halt on panchayat elections in nearly 300 villages across Punjab following multiple complaints of irregularities and alleged bullying during the nomination process. The order was issued on Wednesday while hearing a series of petitions filed by affected candidates and villagers.
According to court records, more than 250 petitions were submitted challenging the conduct of the election process in several villages. Petitioners alleged that administrative lapses, denial of No Objection Certificates (NOCs), and discrepancies in nomination papers prevented candidates from contesting freely.
The court’s stay applies specifically to the villages that have approached the judiciary. The State Election Commission has been directed to respond to the allegations and clarify the steps taken to ensure fairness in the ongoing electoral process.
Both the Shiromani Akali Dal and the Congress have accused the ruling Aam Aadmi Party government of manipulating the panchayat polls. They have demanded transparent supervision and a level playing field for all candidates ahead of any further voting.
