Joly, Mendicino to appear at foreign interference inquiry today
Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly and former public safety minister Marco Mendicino are set to appear today before the federal commission of inquiry examining foreign interference in Canada’s democratic and institutional affairs.
The latest phase of the inquiry is focusing on how well federal agencies detect, assess, and respond to attempts by foreign actors to influence Canadian politics, policy, and society. Officials from Global Affairs Canada, Joly’s department, testified late last week about the challenges of monitoring and countering international interference efforts.

Hospital system apologizes after Brampton Sikh man's beard shaved
The William Osler Health System in Brampton has issued a public apology after hospital staff shaved the beard of an 85-year-old Sikh man without his consent, an act that violated his religious beliefs.
In a joint statement released Wednesday, Dr. Frank Martino, president and CEO of the William Osler Health System, and board chair Pardeep Singh Gill admitted the hospital “failed to uphold religious and cultural care practices.” They said the incident, which occurred in August, was done without medical necessity.

Alberta announces tentative deal with resident doctors
Alberta’s Health Minister Adriana LaGrange says the province has reached a tentative four-year agreement with resident physicians, offering gradual wage increases over the term of the deal.
The agreement, announced Thursday, includes proposed salary hikes of three per cent in each of the first two years and two per cent in each of the final two years. The deal still requires ratification by members of the Professional Association of Resident Physicians of Alberta (PARA).

Ratan Tata, one of India’s most respected business leaders and the chairman emeritus of Tata Sons, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 86. He had been receiving treatment in intensive care at a Mumbai hospital for several days due to age-related health complications.

Leaders condemn 'hateful rhetoric' at B.C. pro-Palestinian protest on Oct. 7
Political leaders across British Columbia and Canada are condemning what they describe as hate-filled and extremist rhetoric at a pro-Palestinian rally in downtown Vancouver, where a masked speaker led chants supporting groups designated as terrorist organizations.
Videos posted online show a woman addressing hundreds gathered at the Vancouver Art Gallery on Monday night, chanting “we are Hezbollah and we are Hamas” and calling for “death to Canada, death to the United States, and death to Israel.” Some attendees were also seen burning Canadian flags.

Vancouver Island man charged in hit-and-run that killed 17-year-old girl
A 28-year-old man from the Cowichan Valley has been charged in connection with a fatal hit-and-run earlier this year that claimed the life of a teenage girl in Duncan.
North Cowichan–Duncan RCMP said the man is facing one count of failing to stop at the scene of an accident causing death. The charge was approved by the B.C. Prosecution Service following what investigators described as a lengthy and complex investigation.

Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly is urging Canadians currently in Florida to leave immediately and warning others to postpone travel plans as Hurricane Milton moves toward the state’s west coast.
