Ratan Tata, one of India’s most respected business leaders and the chairman emeritus of Tata Sons, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 86. He had been receiving treatment in intensive care at a Mumbai hospital for several days due to age-related health complications.

Earlier this week, Tata had said he was undergoing routine medical tests. His condition reportedly deteriorated on Tuesday night, leading to his passing early Wednesday morning.

In a statement, Tata Sons chairman N. Chandrasekaran paid tribute to the industrial icon, calling him “a truly uncommon leader whose immeasurable contributions have shaped not only the Tata Group but also the very fabric of our nation.”

“For the Tata Group, Mr. Tata was more than a chairperson. To me, he was a mentor, guide and friend. He inspired by example. With an unwavering commitment to excellence, integrity, and innovation, the Tata Group under his stewardship expanded its global footprint while always remaining true to its moral compass,” Chandrasekaran said.

Ratan Tata led the Tata Group from 1991 to 2012, a period in which the conglomerate grew into one of the world’s most diversified and globally recognized business enterprises. He was widely admired for his philanthropy, humility, and visionary leadership that blended business success with social responsibility.
